SA Plastic Ban to Exclude Disposable Coffee Cups

South Australia will be the first Australian state to ban plastic straws, cutlery, and drink stirrers under a plan announced by the state government.

Smuggy welcomes this as a huge development in the crusade against plastic waste.

Unfortunately disposable coffee cups are not on the agenda, despite posing a unique risk that makes them a bigger problem than many other plastics.

The reason disposable coffee cups are so damaging is that they have a plastic lining on the inside of the cup that does not easily biodegrade and makes them almost impossible to recycle effectively.

Even many disposable cups that claim to be recyclable would have to be put through specific heat treatment (which rarely actually happens), so they usually end up in landfill or the ocean.

Environmentalists estimate coffee cups to be the second largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles.

Although SA have acknowledged the issue of disposable coffee cups, we at Smuggy feel they should be at the top of the list to get the chop.

We still have the power to make the right choices and Smuggy is always here to help.
